Tortuga Haiti

It was featured in the modern-day film, Pirates of the Caribbean. By the year 1670, as the buccaneer era was in decline, most of the pirates, seeking a new source of trade, turned to log cutting and trading wood from the island. At this same time, an English pirate started to promote himself and invite the pirates on the island of Tortuga to set sail under him.

Again in 1638, the Spanish returned to take the island and rid it of all French and newly settled Dutch. They occupied the island, but to their surprise were beaten back by the French and Dutch colonists who expelled the Spanish. Vector abstraction in black color is isolated on a white background. And so this island was without people for most of the 16th century. Christopher Columbus saw this island on 6 December 1492 and visited it on 14 December. He called the island La Tortuga, Spanish for "The Turtle", because it has the shape, when seen from the sea, of a turtle. Tortuga Island is separated of the north coast of Haiti by an 8.9 to 15 km strait called the Canal de la Tortue ("La Tortue Channel"). The island is 37.5 km long and about 7 km wide, with an area of 193 km².

There are not high mountains but most of the land is between 240 and 300 metres high; the highest point is Morne La Opalmis Visite . In geology, it is considered as the western end of the region of the Cordillera Septentrional ("Northern mountain range") of the Hispaniola island, even if Tortuga Island is separated from the main island. In the following a period, some of the greatest Buccaneers such as Henry Morgan and Francois L'Ollonais launched attacks from Tortuga and became part of island history. From 1670, as the Buccaneer era was in wane, the most Buccaneers found a new trade like log cutting and trading wood from the island, and many others continued their piracy on the ships of foreign nations.

In 1639, to finally establish the decent defense, as the governor of nearby Saint Christopher (now St. Kitts) sent help in Jean Le Vasseur, who was promoted to the new governor of Tortuga. He built the stone fortress “Fort de Rocher” on the highest rise of the island. It was enforced with 40 guns and overlooked any vessels in or near the port. In 1625 French and English colonist, who were early buccaneers, arrived on this island. They were constantly wandering from one location to another until they finally found the Tortuga as the safest place. Before them, this island inhabited only a small group of Spanish colonists in the southern region.
